The Penguin Group

Penguin is one of the world’s leading consumer publishing businesses, and the best loved brand in the industry.
Home to other famous names such as Dorling Kindersley (DK), Puffin, Ladybird, and Rough Guides, Penguin publishes close to 4000 titles every year for adults and children, in fiction and non-fiction, from timeless classics to the hottest bestsellers.

The Birth of Penguin

Penguin was founded by Allen Lane in 1935 and is today one of the world's premier English language publishers. We publish the very best new fiction and non-fiction, literary prize winners and commercial blockbusters on subjects ranging from history and science to essential reference. Every year we publish multiple bestsellers and invest in some of publishing's most exciting new writing talent.
Penguin Group (USA) Inc. is the US affiliate of the Penguin Group. Formed in 1996 as a result of the merger between Penguin Books USA and The Putnam Berkley Group, Penguin Group (USA) is a leading US adult and children's trade book publisher.

70 years of an iconic brand

Penguin recently celebrated its 70th birthday, marking the revolutionary decision of founder Allen Lane, to launch the first Penguin paperbacks in 1935.  Penguin marked its seventieth in style, beating off world-famous brands from all industries to be named British Brand of the Year.

Impressive publishing performance in 2005

An impressive publishing performance in 2005 ensured that Penguin had an average of two New York Times bestsellers and a UK top ten besteller every week. In the US,  it notched up 129 New York Times bestsellers in 2005, including a 66 week run for Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. In the UK, Penguin had 54 titles featured in the top ten in 2005, with 12 titles making it to the number one spot. Penguin also made its biggest ever investment in new talent, publishing 250 first-time authors across the world.

Moving ahead

Today, Penguin has offices in 15 countries, from Penguin US (formed in 1939), to Penguin Ireland (formed in 2003), and keeps over 5,000 different titles in print at any time. In 2005, Penguin built on its reputation for innovation, launching new book formats and enjoying rapid growth in online sales, online book clubs and podcasts. It moved ahead in newer markets like India and China, publishing its first books in Hindi and acquiring worldwide rights to one of China's most popular authors.
