The Birth of Penguin
Penguin was founded by Allen Lane in 1935 and is today one
of the world's premier English language publishers. We publish
the very best new fiction and non-fiction, literary prize
winners and commercial blockbusters on subjects ranging from

publish multiple bestsellers and invest in some of publishing's
most exciting new writing talent.
Penguin Group (USA) Inc. is the US affiliate of the Penguin
Group. Formed in 1996 as a result of the merger between Penguin
Books USA and The Putnam Berkley Group, Penguin Group (USA)
is a leading US adult and children's trade book publisher.
70 years of an iconic brand
Penguin recently celebrated its 70th birthday, marking the
revolutionary decision of founder Allen Lane, to launch the
first Penguin paperbacks in 1935. Penguin marked its
seventieth in style, beating off world-famous brands from
all industries to be named British Brand of the Year.
Impressive publishing performance in 2005
An impressive publishing performance in 2005 ensured that
Penguin had an average of two New York Times bestsellers and
a UK top ten besteller every week. In the US, it notched
up 129 New York Times bestsellers in 2005, including a 66
week run for Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. In the UK,
Penguin had 54 titles featured in the top ten in 2005, with
12 titles making it to the number one spot. Penguin also made
its biggest ever investment in new talent, publishing 250
first-time authors across the world.
Moving ahead
Today, Penguin has offices in 15 countries, from Penguin
US (formed in 1939), to Penguin Ireland (formed in 2003),
and keeps over 5,000 different titles in print at any time.
In 2005, Penguin built on its reputation for innovation, launching
new book formats and enjoying rapid growth in online sales,
online book clubs and podcasts. It moved ahead in newer markets
like India and China, publishing its first books in Hindi
and acquiring worldwide rights to one of China's most popular
authors.
